Choosing the correct truck wheel stud pattern and mounting type is essential when replacing wheels on a truck, trailer or bus. Wheels with the same diameter and number of mounting holes can still have different fitment requirements.

At Mesh Truck Wheels & Accessories, we help customers understand wheel specifications and identify suitable options for their vehicles.

What Is a Truck Wheel Stud Pattern?

A stud pattern, also called a bolt pattern, describes the number of mounting holes and the diameter of the circle passing through their centres.

This measurement is known as the Pitch Circle Diameter, or PCD, and is usually expressed in millimetres.

For example, a truck wheel listed as 10/335 has:

  • 10 mounting holes

  • A 335 mm pitch circle diameter

The PCD is not the diameter of the individual mounting holes or the wheel’s centre opening. These are separate specifications.

Understanding 6-Stud, 8-Stud & 10-Stud Truck Wheels

Stud count is a useful starting point when identifying a wheel, but it does not confirm compatibility.

Stud count What it tells you What still needs checking
6-stud truck wheels The wheel has six mounting holes. PCD, centre bore, mounting type, hole dimensions, offset and load rating.
8-stud truck wheels The wheel has eight mounting holes. The complete wheel specification and compatibility with the vehicle’s hub.
10-stud truck wheels The wheel has ten mounting holes. The exact bolt circle, mounting arrangement and intended application.

Never assume that all wheels with the same stud count will fit the same vehicle.

Truck Wheel Mounting Types Explained

The mounting system determines how a wheel is centred and secured to the vehicle. The wheel, hub, studs and nuts must be designed to work together.

Hub-Piloted Wheels

Hub-piloted truck wheels are centred by locating surfaces on the hub that engage with the wheel’s centre bore.

These systems commonly use two-piece flange nuts. The centre bore, mounting-hole dimensions and specified hardware must match the application.

A matching stud pattern alone does not establish correct hub-piloted fitment.

Stud-Piloted Wheels

Stud-piloted truck wheels are centred through the specified wheel nut seats and mounting hardware.

Ball-seat arrangements are one example. These require the correct seating profile and compatible fasteners to locate and secure the wheel properly.

Hub-piloted and stud-piloted wheels must not be interchanged simply because their bolt circles match.

Ball Seats, Tapered Seats & Flange Nuts

Product descriptions may refer to ball seats, tapered seats, countersinks or flange nuts. These terms describe different seating or fastening arrangements.

  • Ball seats have a rounded seating profile.

  • Tapered or conical seats have an angled seating profile.

  • Flange nuts clamp against the mounting surface specified for that wheel system.

These arrangements are not automatically interchangeable. Confirm the exact seat profile, dimensions and approved hardware using the wheel specification.

Demountable Rims

Demountable truck rims use a different arrangement from conventional disc wheels. The rim mounts to a compatible wheel centre using the specified clamps and components.

For these applications, rim diameter and width must be checked alongside the mounting profile, clamp system and any required spacer bands.

Other Measurements That Affect Truck Wheel Fitment

Stud pattern is only one part of selecting replacement truck wheels.

Specification Why it matters
Centre bore Determines compatibility with the hub and centring arrangement.
Mounting-hole dimensions Must suit the specified studs, seats and fastening system.
Rim width and diameter Must suit the approved tyre combination and vehicle requirements.
Offset, inset or outset Determines the wheel’s position relative to the mounting face.
Dual-wheel spacing Must provide the required separation for the selected tyres.
Load rating Must meet the requirements of the intended application.
Disc thickness and stud engagement Affect the suitability of the mounting hardware, particularly when changing wheel materials.

How to Identify Your Existing Wheel

Start with the manufacturer’s product code and any stamped or engraved markings. These can help identify the wheel more accurately than appearance alone.

Check the specifications against the vehicle and hub requirements. If markings are unclear or inaccessible, ask a qualified wheel and tyre technician to inspect the assembly.

Avoid relying on a vehicle’s make and model alone, as different axle and hub configurations may require different wheels.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will any 10-stud truck wheel fit my truck?

No. Ten-stud wheels can have different PCDs, centre bores, mounting types, offsets and load ratings. The complete specification must match your application.

Can I replace steel truck wheels with aluminium wheels?

A change may be possible, but compatibility must be assessed first. Disc thickness, stud length, mounting hardware, clearances and dual spacing may differ.

Can I identify the mounting type from a photo?

Photos can help with initial identification, but they do not replace checking product specifications and the vehicle’s mounting system.
